De Hoogstraat is a medical rehabilitation center in Utrecht. It is the research and innovation center of the UMC Utrech Hospital that aims at improving the rehabilitation treatment by performing scientific research, innovation and implementation of projects. This medical center is a specialist in rehabilitating patients that suffered from a stroke. Strokes often lead to problems in the movement of hands and arms, which can severely impact the daily life of the patients. Everyday activities can become limited since the most basic actions like eating and drinking involve arm and hand movement. This is why de Hoogstraat is cooperating with six other rehabilitation centers in a project that involves development of a robot arm. These seven centers are equipped with the ArmeoBoom, a training rehabilitation device to help patients practice and regain motor function by using fun games. Using this method, patients become less dependent on their doctors and they become more motivated as they will be able to monitor their own progress.
